"SPECIAL" BROWN JR ENGINES

S/N B3257R

John Mohan Engines

Both of these Brown engines are from the estate of Jack Mohan. They were originally owned by Jack's older brother John Mohan who was a waist gunner on a B-17 and was killed during WWII. John was several years older than Jack and was an avid modeler before the war. He was from Rosevelt Field, Long island, NY. The 1935 brown B had an "R" stamped on the lug by the factory when the piston was replaced in 1936. This engine was never flown. Both engines were in a display case for 75 years before my purchase of them.

No S/N

Reproduction Brown Jr

This engine has a ringed piston and a 1939 / 1942 Cylinder - Venturi - Needle Valve arrangement. The timer and crankcase appear to be home made. The cast crankcase has no "Brown Junior Motors" logo stamped around cylinder boss on case and has no serialnumber or other stamping. The backplate is also cast and minimally finished. The fuel bown ring is not a stock appearing item although the cast top portion is marked "Junior Motors." The prop washer is non-stock.

S/N 15265D

Customized Brown Jr D

This engine has a 1938 crankcase SN 15265D (Note: Serial number placement with numbers on front of left lug and "D" on right side between scew holes is consistent with a 1938 engine but serial numbers for 1938 only go to 13500 per references).   Cylinder appears to be a replacement with spraybar hole in middle of venturi tube rather than at the end as is found on the 1938 engines.   The fuel bowl assembly is a later model plastic tank.   The bowl appears to be a repro.   The engine is equipped with an accessory exhaust extension and an aftermarket finned head top.

S/N 15265D

S/N 21C7

1941 Brown Jr C with Herb Wahl Parts

This engine appears to have been reworked at some time.   It appears to have a 1941 C crankcase, however the serial number 21C7 is missing the last number as the series displayed a xxCxx numbering format.   The underside of the left mounting lug is engraved (not stamped) with the number 7385.   The engine has Herb Wahl parts including Spark Plug, Cylinder, Timer, Spray Bar, and Fuel Bowl Assembly.  Also has an accessory exhaust extension.

S/N 21C7

S/N 35D83

1939 Brown Jr D with Herb Wahl Parts

This engine appears to have been reworked at some time possible by Herb himself.   The cylinder has been replated.   The engine has Herb Wahl parts including Spark Plug, Timer, Spray Bar, and Fuel Bowl Assembly.

Replacement Brown Jr

This engine has a cast crankcase and backplate with .165" thick mounting lugs and "Brown Junior Motors" logo stamped around cylinder boss on case - No serial number - an "R" is stamped on the front of the left mounting lug as was done when the factory replaced a broken crankcase - The venturi is straight with the spraybar in the middle of the venturi and a choke nut at the end - Equipped with a plastic fuel tank assembly - The cylinder fins same diameter except top and bottom fins which are smaller - Die cast vertical timer with no bump on back of casting - Bypass "tacked" on before final brazing   The engine is equipped with a brass, possibly home made, accessory exhaust extension

Herb's "Other" Motors

Over the years herb made a number of one off, two off, or three off engines as the mood took him - Sometimes as the result of a "mistake" some engines were built - One example of this is around 5 Bunch engines with the exhaust on the right side - Three examples are pictured here - #15 with square head fins, #16 with gold plated cylinder, and #17 with the exhaust on the opposite side - Most of these were only available at the Toledo R/C show in various years
